Let’s see what direction the story goes from here. It gives context to the previous events while also throwing in some characterization and symbolism into the mix. Compared to the previous episode the story flows smoother without much of the contrivances (save the ones that carried over) The writing in this episode was quite nicely done. Maybe the writers could stay on the ball in that respect. I hope that these kinds of subtle symbolism is continued in later episodes. The comparison would suggest to contextualise Nine and Twelve’s actions as a plot for revenge. The symbolism with the tale of Oedipus Rex nicely lends meaning to that what Sphinx is trying to do. We could potentially see some nice interplay between the different sides of the boys come and add weight to their backstory and their struggle to reconcile their past.Īnother strength of the what is being presented here is the nice use of story elements to also serve at thematic development. Maybe this is who they should have been: just another ordinary teenager. Twelve’s prank on Lisa really does give him some sense of that playful capricious nature we expect from teenagers. This comes through most in the episode with the scene with Twelve and Lisa in the manga café. Less apparent is the swaps between who they are and who they pretend to be. Obviously the contrasting personalities of the two act as nice (if not obtuse) foil, deepening the characterized interactions. The show seems to want to both convict and humanize the two terrorist with some dualism. I also like Nine and Twelve’s brief moments characterization in the episode. It feels like the city is bend under their will and an incident might occur at any time. This dominating presence is what I mean by charisma. They go the extra mile to taunt with signature markings, appear in public videos, and deliver their bombs in broad daylight and yet those in power are helpless against them. Even up against the best police response Japan has to offer, Sphinx stays unhesitant.

In the vein of similar shows like Death Note and Code Geass, In Zankyou no Terror the protagonists make themselves to be above the rest. Specifically, Zankyou no Terror demonstrates charisma. With some riddles, metaphors, and some capricious child terrorist, Terror manages to deliver some of what I was looking for when I decided to blog this show.
